Since sliced bread!

A neighbor once told me a story about my mom stating that the microwave was the "greatest thing since sliced bread"... I wonder in a persons life time how many things they've thought to be the greatest thing "since sliced bread"... well having stared some baking for the church we now belong to... I think one of the greatest things is my Kitchen Aid mixer! A neighbor and I were talking about this just before Halloween... as I have a mixer which is really and truly great when one is trying to make dough for 6 nut roll or a ton of holiday cookies to share! Recently rated by Good Housekeeping to be #1 as well... I informed one of my sisters this evening that everyone should have one... that's my first holiday tip for everyone!

When Was the Kitchenaid Stand Mixer Invented?

The invention of the Kitchenaid Mixer dates back to 1908 when an engineer for the Hobart Manufacturing Company, Herbert Johnson, observed a baker mixing dough using a metal spoon. He took that as inspiration and created a mechanical version, which became the first electric standing mixer. This stand mixer eventually became common equipment in plenty of large bakeries.

The first home mixer was eventually introduced in 1919 and was called the model H-5. Hobart called this the "Food Preparer" and was the first stand mixer for home use. The first home mixer wasn't cheap and convenient though – it cost around $189.50 and weighed more than 60 pounds. In 1936, however, Egmont Ahrens redesigned the mixer by trimming it down and lowered the price considerably and that's when the mixer started turning heads of customers.
